Mirror, Mirror in the House
Written by Sofia Reyes
“I wanna be adopted now. I’m tired of this” Jacob said. He was the first person I met here in the orphanage, he is 14 now and he’s been here since he was 4. His family died because of fire during Christmas; he was the only one that survived because he was out with his friends ‘til 2 in the morning. Now me, I’m Scanter, 13 years old. I’ve been here for almost 3 years I think. My family died because of a car accident when I was 10; I planned on going to my relatives but I didn’t know who they were. My life is somehow a mess because I’m not normal, I have secret powers.
“Lights out”, yelled Sister Lucy. “Jacob! You awake?” I asked. During the night, we would usually play with my powers, create something, or talk ‘til we fall asleep. He is the most amazing person you’d meet for he is funny and huggable. “Okay! Got it”. I made a ham sandwich because he was hungry. I saw a mirror across the room and stared at it. Something’s not quite right. I asked Jacob to look at it but he said it was just normal. Weird.
There was only one light in the room I’m in right now; it looks like I’m in the cave somehow. I walked towards the light but as I went nearer it got dimmer, so I ran after it but then I got trapped. Voices, whispers, they were all I heard. They’re telling me to go into the mirror and I asked why. It said that beneath my reflection is a place where miracles can happen. Then, I woke up.
When I was about to enter the mirror, Sister Lucy pulled me back and told me it is a danger zone so I mustn’t enter it. But curiosity was feeding on me so at 3 am I entered the mirror. Crying sounds, dead spirits were all I saw. I trembled ‘til I was numb. I wanted to run away but I was too stiff. A hand then pulled me. I searched for the face but there was none; then I realized, it was only a hand. Screaming didn’t help because no voice came out so I just followed the hand where it was leading me.
From afar, I saw a man and woman weeping so much; to me it looked like they weren’t used to being dead and still wanted to live. When I came closer, I realized they were my parents. “Revive them with your powers”, said the hand. In my mind, I was thinking how I could try reviving my parents with food, then the hand went near me and gave me instructions. At 5am I was out of the mirror with my undead, immortal parents.
“Where were you last night? I was looking for you because there were noises and I got scared” Jacob is sometimes; oh wait no, most of the time scared. According to him, evil spirits were the ones who burned down their house before and he saw it. “I just went to the CR maybe” I answered confidently. Midnight came and I heard voices and realized Jacob was telling the truth. I followed the place like a mouse and found out that it was from the mirror. Getting a good sleep might distract me, I thought to myself.
“Focus everywhere! Dead people! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!” “Dude! You alright?” Jacob asked. “Yeah, I’m fine”. That dream has something to do with the mirror, I said to myself. That night, I checked my reflection and noticed my face was different, when I touched the mirror, it was a demon and it possessed me.
“Dude what happened to you?! What are these things?!!” I heard Jacob. He flew way up high as I lifted my arms. Blood spilled from his body like water from a faucet. “What happened?!” Sister Lucy said. “You can’t take me away from his body. This is my body now,” said the demon. “With my powers I can do anything!” said Sister Lucy. Light from her eyes came out like hands and grabbed the demon’s soul out of my body. After the demon left my body, I was a falling star that hit the floor hard. According to Jacob’s story, Sister Lucy removed the mirror from the orphanage after the incident.
People ask, why the mirror? And I tell them the story behind it. The orphanage’s lot before was a house built with high brick walls. There lived a family according to the people nearby. They would often hear noises; specifically cries from the children. The family never goes out of that house and no one knows how they survive. One night something was different in their place, a neighbour saw blood coming out of the bricks, they tried to break it but it was too impossible. Next morning, they found out that the bricks have fallen; dead bodies were found and beside them was the mirror, written there were their names. The officers said they’re a family of witches. They do rituals all the time; Banshee was the mother and also the leader. The mirror was a passage to the world they created. The family lives there now.
Since then the mirror was locked up in a room, the priest would offer something to it and bless it four times a month. Nobody knows how it got to the orphanage; it was a mystery people can’t solve.
“Great day, huh? It was like a freedom day. Get it? We did whatever we wanted to do” Jacob asked. “You’ll always be a clown. Haha!” I laughed. “Let’s go to sleep now, I wanna dream of food already” Jacob ordered. “Yeah, piggy!” I said jokingly. My man here really loves to eat even if it was just 5 minutes after lunch or dinner.
*clock strikes at 3 am*
“Scanter, it’s time to go with us now”, I heard the voice that sounded like my parents. When I opened my eyes, It was them but something was wrong. I observed and observed and then... *gasp*.
