Ascend

In front of a whole body mirror stood a girl. The girl had a pale complexion, hair black as night, and dark brown eyes. To the men and boys who notice her, they felt something mysterious, and her look can captivate too. She is something behind the veil. The girl wore a beautiful black dress with a layered bottom made of a violet fabric that added to her beauty. She was staring outside of the window when she noticed her hair wasn’t fixed yet. Her eyes flashed gold and suddenly her hair was fixed into a braid. You may be asking who and what she is.


She is a witch and her name is Nicole Hale.

Nicole is turning 18 on October 31, midnight. To a mortal, it is the happiest day of their teenage life; but to a witch, it is a blessing and curse. When a witch or a warlock turns 18, their powers ascend to maturity. That day is when their powers are the strongest and they are invincible for that time. You may think that’s good, but there is a lore saying that if you kill a witch on their 18th birthday, their powers will be yours. And Nicole is scared for a witch wants to kill her. Her family got hurt because of Kira. Lina, a member of her covenant, got attacked and is now in a coma. Her family and friends are protecting her all the time after that. Her family knows that Kira will attack her today and Kira will do anything in her power just to kill Nicole. Nicole is not worried about dying. She is worried about what will happen to her family. Will they be killed? Will they be tortured or banished from the town. Please not, she begged the sky.

Suddenly there was a knock on the door. Nicole looked at the door for a moment before asking “Who is it?”

“It’s just me” The door opened and a girl came in. Stellar. Her second in command in the covenant and her best friend who was wearing a green dress.

“Are you alright?” she asked Nicole.

Nicole did not answer; she just looked at the window. Stellar noticed this so she went near Nicole. Nicole looked at her.

“If I die—“

“You won’t die,” Stellar interrupted her.

“If I die, protect the covenant and the family…,” she continued.

“I will always protect the family,” Stellar interrupted her once more.

“Don’t avenge me” Nicole said, looking at Stellar.

Stellar looked down.

There was a moment of silence.

“Stellar,” Nicole said.

There was a knock on the door and it opened. Her father, Peter, came in the room.

“Are you ready?” Peter asked his daughter.

Nicole closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

“I’m ready.”

Nicole stood on top of the trunk, looking at her covenant and family.

Her covenant was excited to see her ascend but there was fear for Kira wanted to kill her.

Her father went near her and said “There is a sword buried under the pile of leaves beside the trunk. Get it if Kira attacks.”

Nicole nodded.

Her father kissed her forehead and said, “Everything is going to be fine in the end.”

They were all waiting until the cloud showed the moon. Nicole felt the blood pumping on her veins. Her magic became stronger. She felt so strong that she could be a lion or maybe stronger than that.

Her father said, “That’s only the start. When the moon is full moon and no cloud could be seen…”

Nicole could only nod, not trusting herself to speak.

She was happy that she almost forgot about Kira.

Almost.

They were all smiling when suddenly there was a howl. They were all looking at the direction of the howl. A wolf appeared fast and started attacking them. Nicole was the only one they did not attack.

“Werewolves” Her father said, stabbing a werewolf with a sword.

Suddenly, a witch appeared in front of them. They knew who she is. Kira.

“Sorry I have to crash your party Nic. But to show how truly sorry I am, I brought the pups.”

The werewolves circled them.

“Aren’t they cute? Their teeth are sharp as knives, and their claws, look at their claws. They look so shiny, but it will be better if there were blood on it” Kira said, smiling like she’s an angel.

Nicole stood forward and asked, “Why are you doing this? The lore is a myth.”

“Well, first I want to have your power. Second, I hate the Hale family. Third, it’s just fun to destroy a life…… Back to the topic, I’ll spare your covenant and family if you go with me willingly,” Kira offered to Nicole

Nicole was going to accept her offer when her father stepped forward and said, “We’d rather die than see her leave with you.” Her father and the covenant raised their swords. “We will protect her to the very end.”

Kira said, “Well, I tried Nicole. Pups, go wild!”

The werewolves and the covenant attacked each other.

Nicole and Kira were fighting too. They were sending spells and attacks to each other.

Nicole was getting weaker, so she fell.

“Can’t you just give up? I’ve already defeated you” Kira said.

“Look up, Kira. Just look up,” Nicole said.

Kira looked up and saw the full moon, and no cloud could be seen.

“It’s payback time,” Nicole said.

Nicole attacked Kira with all she got. It took time but Kira fell to the floor.

“Don’t kill me, please,” Kira begged.

Nicole only looked.

“I’ll rather die than be killed by a low class witch.”

Kira took a knife and stabbed herself with it, no hesitation.

Nicole looked away. She started to walk to her family thinking, “It’s over.”
